UPDATED: INEC presents certificates of return to Edo gov-elect, deputy

The electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has officially presented certificates of return to the Governor-elect of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, and his Deputy, Dennis Idahosa. The certificates were handed over by INEC’s National Commissioner for Edo State, Rhoda Gumus, solidifying Okpebholo and Idahosa’s positions as governor and deputy governor of the state. Okpebholo’s victory in the closely contested election was announced by the Returning Officer, Prof. Faruq Kuta, with him securing 291,667 votes across 11 of the 18 Local Government Areas, defeating his closest rival who garnered 247,274 votes. The current Governor, Godwin Obaseki, is expected to vacate his position on November 11 after completing two terms in office.
