The spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force has issued a warning to the public about the consequences of spreading false information, misinformation, or distorting facts online. Emphasizing the seriousness of these actions, the official stressed the importance of fact-checking before sharing any information. It was highlighted that spreading falsehoods online is considered a criminal offense, and individuals, including bloggers, journalists, and content creators, were urged to verify the accuracy of their content before publishing. The official also clarified that actions were taken against those intentionally spreading false information, rather than targeting government critics or the Inspector General of Police. It was emphasized that the police have not been using the Cybercrime Act to intimidate individuals expressing critiques but have focused on prosecuting those spreading deliberate falsehoods.
