A House of Representatives member from Borno State, Ahmed Jaha, expressed his concerns regarding tax bills during a recent session. He emphasized the importance of clarity in the legislative process. Jaha, representing Chibok/Damboa/Gwoza Federal Constituency, highlighted procedural issues in the transmission of the bills to the National Assembly, leading to controversies among parliament members.
While acknowledging some favorable aspects of the tax reforms, Jaha advocated for maintaining certain provisions to ensure fairness and good governance. He opposed the proposed inheritance tax, citing religious beliefs that prioritize protecting the estate of deceased individuals in Islam, Christianity, and traditional practices. Jaha also criticized the provision suggesting the Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Inland Revenue Service act as Chairman of the Board simultaneously, emphasizing the importance of checks and balances in governance.
