A woman, Olamide Thomas, accused of making death threats against President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi, and the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun on social media, was granted bail of N10 million by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The bail was granted with one surety in a like sum, with the judge stating that there was insufficient evidence to suggest that the defendant would flee or interfere with the trial.
The judge also mandated the surety to provide an affidavit of means, a three-year tax clearance certificate, and be a resident within the court’s jurisdiction. Additionally, the surety and the defendant were required to deposit two recent passport photographs with the court’s registrar, with the surety’s address needing verification.
The case was adjourned till February 18, 2025, for the trial to commence, after the defendant pleaded not guilty to three counts brought against her by the Inspector General of Police, leading to her remand at the Suleja Correctional Centre.
The charges against Thomas included harassing and threatening Seyi, the IG, and the Police Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi through a viral social media post. The prosecution alleged that the defendant’s actions, including making threatening remarks in Yoruba Language in a video recording, caused fear of death, violence, or bodily harm to the victims.
The prosecutor cited violations of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024 in the charges against Thomas, emphasizing the seriousness of the offences committed.
