Yahaya Bello to remain in prison pending perfection of bail

The Federal High Court in Abuja, under the jurisdiction of Justice Emeka Nwite, has directed the former governor of Kogi State to be held in Kuje correctional facility until the conditions of his bail are met. The bail was set at N500m along with two sureties who must be property owners in Abuja. The court emphasized that the decision to grant bail is discretionary and was made after considering arguments from both sides.

The former governor is facing multiple charges including money laundering and misappropriation of public funds amounting to about N80.2bn as brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. During the court proceedings, the defense counsel requested bail for the defendant, assuring the court that he would cooperate fully with the trial process.

In a separate case, the former governor is also involved in a N110.4bn fraud charge before another court in Abuja. The judge in that case has ordered his remand in Kuje correctional facility due to procedural irregularities in his bail application.
