Yahoo boys now involved in ritual killings, banditry – EFCC chair

The head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has defended the agency’s efforts to combat internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as Yahoo Yahoo boys. Despite facing criticism, Olukoyede emphasized the significant financial losses of over $500 million to internet fraud in the country in one year.

Olukoyede highlighted the evolving criminal activities of internet fraudsters, extending beyond online scams to more perilous crimes like kidnapping, ritual killings, and arms trafficking. He stressed the severity of these crimes and the need for decisive action to prevent further escalation.

The EFCC chairman also addressed the internal cleansing within the agency, revealing the dismissal of 27 staff members over corruption allegations in the past year. Upholding integrity in the fight against corruption was emphasized, with Olukoyede challenging any allegations of bribery during his service.

Moreover, Olukoyede urged the media to actively participate in shaping public perception of the EFCC’s work. He called for investigative journalism to spotlight both corruption issues and the agency’s accomplishments, emphasizing the crucial role of media in the anti-corruption campaign.

The Chief of Staff to the EFCC Chairman, Michael Nzekwe, commended the media for its role in creating awareness and advocacy against corruption, encouraging further collaboration for the greater good of Nigeria.
