2027: Police warn officers against partisan politics in Plateau

The Plateau State Police Command has warned its personnel against partisan politics and the misuse of police authority ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Commissioner of Police, Ayodeji Faniyan, gave the warning on Thursday during the command’s monthly strategic conference with officers at the Police Officers’ Mess in Jos.

The conference was organised to strengthen operational effectiveness, promote accountability and improve security across the state.

Addressing the officers, Faniyan called for strict compliance with directives from the Inspector-General of Police and adherence to internationally recognised policing standards.

“Effective policing requires discipline, vigilance, sound judgment, and strict adherence to established operational procedures and the rule of law,” he said.

He urged officers to maintain professionalism and impartiality, respect citizens’ fundamental rights and remain accountable for their actions.

The commissioner warned that misconduct, including incivility, extortion, brutality and abuse of authority, would not be tolerated.

He also emphasised the need for timely intelligence gathering, swift responses to security threats, effective command and control, and stronger community engagement.

Faniyan directed officers to intensify crime prevention and detection efforts while ensuring that their operations remained lawful, proportionate and responsive to security challenges in their respective areas.

As part of preparations for the ember months, he instructed Area and Squadron Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to strengthen collaboration with other security agencies to maintain peace across the state.

On the forthcoming elections, the command’s spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, said the commissioner had directed officers to remain neutral in their duties.

“In view of the forthcoming 2027 general elections, the Commissioner of Police charged officers to remain strictly apolitical, impartial, and professional in the discharge of their responsibilities.

“He warned against partisan policing, the misuse of police authority, and any conduct capable of undermining public confidence in the electoral process,” he added.

Faniyan assured residents that the command would provide a secure environment for lawful political activities and ensure that individuals and political groups were treated fairly and in accordance with the law.
