The latest Cadre Harmonisé Report predicts that approximately 33.1 million individuals in 26 states and the FCT will encounter a food and nutrition crisis from June to August 2025. This analysis, conducted by various organizations including the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation and the World Food Programme, highlights states such as Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, and others being affected.
The report also mentions that around 25 million people in these areas are currently facing food crises, with over 500,000 Internally Displaced Persons in Borno, Sokoto, and Zamfara. Urgent action and collaboration are urged by FAO’s Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Kouacou Koffy, to combat the challenges of food insecurity in the country.
Koffy emphasized the need for a unified approach to address the various factors contributing to the crisis, such as economic challenges, climate-related issues, and insecurity. The aim of CH workshops is to analyze data on food security and propose solutions to prevent or reduce food crises in at-risk areas.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security expressed the government’s commitment to implementing the report’s recommendations for enhancing food security programs nationwide. Key drivers of the food crisis, according to the CH Focal Person for the National Programme on Food Security, include high food prices, flooding, and insecurity.
