Govt orders evacuation as flood wreaks havoc in Ondo

In Ondo town, Ondo State, a heavy downpour led to severe flooding in various areas, causing extensive damage to property valued at millions of naira. The affected locations included Itanla, Oka, Odo Ijomu, Bethlehem, and Akure-Ondo Expressway. Many houses and vehicles were submerged, displacing numerous residents. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported.

In response to the incident, the state government initiated evacuation efforts and rapid response actions to prevent further harm. The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Oyeniyi Oseni, confirmed these measures in a statement issued on Saturday. The government also announced plans to prevent future flooding by deploying Amphibious Excavators to critical erosion-prone areas for dredging.

The statement attributed the cause of the recent flooding to development encroaching on waterways in certain areas of the community. The Commissioner pledged collaboration with relevant government departments to address unauthorized constructions along water bodies.
