A woman from Canada, aged 41, was apprehended at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for trying to bring in a significant amount of synthetic cannabis known as ‘Canadian Loud’. The arrest took place as she was clearing customs on a flight from Canada on October 3, 2024.
Upon inspection of her luggage, the woman was discovered to have 74 parcels of the illicit substance weighing 35.20 kilograms. She confessed that she had accepted an online offer to traffic the drugs for financial gain to support her studies in Canada.
In a separate operation, a large quantity of opioids and codeine-based syrup worth over N9 billion was seized at the Port Harcourt Ports in Rivers State. Additionally, at the Tincan seaport in Lagos, 100 parcels of Canadian Loud were intercepted. The consignment was hidden in imported vehicles from Canada.
Furthermore, in Taraba State, a commercial bus was intercepted carrying cannabis hidden in bags of garri. Multiple suspects were arrested in connection with the various drug seizures, including the recovery of a mixture of illicit drugs from a suspect in Lagos.
The NDLEA also conducted raids on cannabis farms in Edo and Ondo states, resulting in the destruction of a large quantity of cannabis plants and the recovery of processed psychoactive substances.
