The decrease in Nigerian youth joining the military has been linked to the rise of Information Technology job opportunities attracting their interest away from military service. Concerns were raised by the Lagos State Government about the lack of enthusiasm among youths to join the military in the state. The Secretary to the State Government emphasized the importance of state participation in military enlistment.
A security expert mentioned that the appeal of IT jobs and the challenging conditions and training in the military are deterring factors for Nigerian youths. The expert highlighted the need for the military to modernize its approach to attract tech-savvy individuals. The importance of nationwide representation in the military was also emphasized.
A retired Brigadier General disagreed with claims that South West youths lack interest in military service, stating that some may not meet recruitment criteria but many are eager to join. The Director of Defence Information clarified that recruitment processes are fair and transparent, with equal opportunities for all Nigerians. State governments are involved in monitoring recruitment exercises to ensure fairness.
