The call to prioritize girls’ education and empowerment in Nigeria was made by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. During the International Day of the Girl Child event in Keffi, Nasarawa State, the Advocacy and Marketing Manager of AHF emphasized the need for increased support from the government and private sector stakeholders. The event included activities such as providing free sanitary products, lessons on gender-based violence and menstrual health, and the launch of the Girls Act initiative.
Empowering girls was highlighted as essential for building a stronger and more equitable society. The Girls Act initiative aims to provide mentorship, skills training, and support networks for girls. The importance of education in empowering girls to delay marriage, have fewer children, and contribute to the economy was underscored.
Despite progress, challenges such as cultural and societal barriers still hinder girls’ education. Efforts by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, community leaders, and local governments are crucial in addressing these challenges and promoting girls’ empowerment. Community engagement plays a vital role in raising awareness among parents and guardians about the significance of girls’ education.
The International Day of the Girl Child seeks to promote equal opportunities for girls and raise awareness about gender-based inequalities. It aims to address issues such as limited access to education, nutrition, legal rights, and medical care that disproportionately affect girls worldwide. The day serves as a platform to amplify girls’ voices, actions, and leadership in the quest for a world where girls have equal opportunities to thrive and reach their full potential.
The event concluded with a call to support and empower girls, break down barriers, and foster a brighter future by promoting girls’ education, health, and protection. It reinforced the commitment to shaping a more equitable world for all by celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child.
