Speaker Abbas urges enhanced women’s inclusion in governance

The Speaker of the House of Representatives recently emphasized the importance of involving more women in critical decision-making roles, especially in elective positions across all levels of government. This call was made during an international legislative dialogue on women and the constitutional amendment process in Nigeria.

The Speaker highlighted the significant impact of gender inclusion in governance, citing examples from countries like Rwanda, South Africa, Namibia, and Senegal. These nations have shown the positive influence of women’s perspectives on governance and development. The Speaker stressed the need for intentional policies to promote women’s participation, as it is crucial for sustainable national development and stability.

During the event, Senate President’s representative urged the constitution review committee to prioritize amplifying women’s voices in existing laws. Additionally, the Deputy Speaker of the House mentioned that women’s involvement in governance could significantly boost the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

Various stakeholders, including the First Lady’s representative and the United Nations Development Programme’s Resident Representative, emphasized the importance of engaging women in decision-making processes. They highlighted the need for gender-sensitive language in the constitution and ensuring that women have a seat at the table where crucial decisions are made.
