Retired military women decry alleged govt neglect

The Female Military Veterans Association has expressed concerns about the lack of recognition and support for women who have served in the military. According to the association, female military personnel often face neglect and obscurity after retiring from active service. The Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Major General Abimbola Amusu, highlighted the challenges faced by retired female soldiers, including the lack of acknowledgment for their contributions. She also mentioned the sacrifices these women make, such as postponing personal milestones like marriage and education, as well as dealing with long-term physical and mental health issues.

Amusu emphasized the importance of remembering and honoring female veterans for their service and sacrifices. She explained that despite working alongside male counterparts during their service, many female veterans do not receive the recognition they deserve upon retirement. The association aims to provide a platform for female veterans to come together, support each other, engage in meaningful discussions, and amplify their voices.

The national coordinator of the association, Morenike Grace, noted that female veterans, especially single mothers, often lack the necessary support. Amusu encouraged female veterans to take pride in their service and not let any challenges bring them down, reminding them of their crucial role in ensuring national security.
