Ex-SDP presidential candidate urges politicians to restore Nigerians’ trust in leadership

In a recent gathering of former and current House of Representatives members, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, highlighted the urgent need for rehabilitating Nigeria’s political class to regain the trust of the people. The event, which took place in Abuja, aimed to foster unity and dialogue among lawmakers spanning from 1979 to the present.

Adebayo stressed the importance of revamping the Nigerian political system with leaders committed to serving the populace sincerely. He expressed concern over the prevailing negative perception of politicians lacking integrity, tarnishing the country’s image internationally.

As the keynote speaker, Adebayo lauded the event’s organizer, Rt Honourable Mulikat Adeola, and urged both past and present legislators to stand against injustice and misconduct when necessary. He acknowledged the dwindling trust of constituents in House of Representatives members, emphasizing the need for introspection and realignment with the people’s interests.

Emphasizing the necessity for Nigerians to hold their political leaders in high regard, Adebayo envisioned a scenario where politicians are respected and trusted by the populace. He underscored the importance of a rehabilitated political class to garner respect for Nigeria globally.

Furthermore, Adebayo advocated for robust institutions such as security, judiciary, civil service, and industry for a prosperous Nigeria. He decried the prevalent view of politics as a mere self-serving career rather than a platform for public service, especially in a country grappling with high unemployment rates.

The event also featured remarks from Adeola and former Speaker Yakubu Dogara, who pledged to sustain dialogues on national issues and parliamentary concerns, prioritizing nation-building and unity amidst economic challenges.
