In Mgbuji community in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, tragic incidents have occurred where three farmers lost their lives in attacks by suspected herdsmen. These attacks also left several others injured. Disturbing video clips revealed the gruesome aftermath, with one victim found slaughtered in his rice farm next to a basket of cassava he had harvested before the attack.
This is not the first time such violence has taken place in the area. In previous clashes between herdsmen and locals, over 20 farm settlements were destroyed, resulting in the loss of at least 123 lives between 2019 and 2022.
A community leader, Ogenyi Odoh, confirmed the recent attacks and killings, pleading for urgent government intervention to halt the deadly assaults by the herdsmen. He highlighted the brutality of the attacks and questioned the lack of protection in the area, especially after the withdrawal of soldiers deployed before the attacks resumed.
Odoh expressed concern over the limited presence of security forces in Eha-Amufu, leaving the community vulnerable to armed herdsmen. He also mentioned the challenges faced in getting medical treatment for the victims, with one injured individual requiring a substantial amount for treatment at a private hospital.
Despite these distressing events, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, stated that there were no official reports of such incidents at the time of contact. The situation remains dire, calling for immediate attention and action to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of the community.
