I completed my Zoology degree at Bauchi State University and have been working as a tailor. Tailoring has been my main source of income, even during my university studies. My fiancée, Fatima, recently finished secondary school and is currently not employed, focusing on her future endeavors.
You recently shared on social media the reason for canceling your wedding due to genotype incompatibility. Why was this issue not addressed earlier in your relationship?
Fatima and I, being cousins, did not consider genotype testing necessary initially. Given our family history of mostly AA genotypes, we assumed there wouldn’t be any complications.
Is marrying a relative a common practice in your culture?

Why did you decide to undergo genotype testing after three years, despite assuming there wouldn’t be any issues?
We opted for genotype testing to ensure our compatibility before marriage, prioritizing the health of our potential children. The results revealed that we both had AS genotypes, leading us to reconsider our plans.
How did you handle the news of sharing the AS genotype with Fatima?
Discovering our genotype incompatibility was devastating, as it threatened our future plans and the well-being of our children. Despite our love, we decided to end the relationship to prevent any potential health risks.
What transpired after the genotype revelation?
Her parents arranged for her to marry someone else on our originally planned wedding date.
How did you both reach the decision to call off the wedding?
Despite pressure from our families, we mutually agreed to separate due to the risks involved. The situation has been heartbreaking for all involved.
How has Fatima reacted to the breakup?
Fatima has been deeply affected by the breakup, struggling with the sudden change and conflicting emotions between her desires and family expectations.
How do you plan to move forward after this experience?
We have accepted the situation and are focusing on healing and moving forward separately.
What lessons can be drawn from your story?
Our experience underscores the importance of early genotype testing in relationships to avoid potential complications later on. It’s crucial to address such critical issues proactively.
What personal lessons have you taken away from this experience?
I have learned the significance of addressing important matters early in a relationship and taking responsibility for tough decisions to prevent future hardships. It’s essential to prioritize practical aspects alongside emotions in any relationship.
