The Lilypond Export Command of the Nigeria Customs Service reported the interception of 11 20-foot containers containing timber and unprocessed wood worth $296 million. The Customs Area Controller, Jibola Odusanya, revealed this during a press briefing at the command. The containers were seized at the barge area of Apapa Port in Lagos.
Acting on credible intelligence, a joint team from the Lilypond Export Command and the Customs Intelligence Unit intercepted the containers suspected of smuggling after the discharge of export-bound containers at the Apapa Port on October 11, 2024. The seized containers were found to be loaded with rough and sawn timber, contravening the Common External Tariff.
Due to the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, the detained containers have been converted to seizures. Odusanya stressed that this action should deter any individual or entity from attempting to smuggle restricted goods out of the country. The Customs Area Controller reiterated the commitment to uphold compliance with the laws of the country and prevent illegal exports, emphasizing the zero tolerance for smuggling, including in the export sector.
