Electricity subsidy to hit N2.4tn by year-end – FG

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission announced plans to allocate approximately N2.4 trillion towards power subsidies by the end of the year. Dr. Yusuf Ali, the Commissioner of Planning, Research, and Strategy at NERC, disclosed this information during an event in Lagos. The subsidy amount has been fluctuating due to challenges with foreign exchange and tariff adjustments. Ali projected that the monthly subsidy for electricity could reach N260 billion in December. The N2.4 trillion estimate may be subject to change based on monthly tariff calculations.

The Minister of Power, represented by the Chief Technical Adviser, highlighted the development of an Integrated National Electricity Policy in collaboration with PricewaterhouseCoopers. The policy aims to address key challenges in the power sector and stresses the importance of implementing cost-reflective tariffs to attract investments and ensure sustainability. The minister acknowledged the necessity of such tariffs for achieving continuous electricity supply and universal access.

Efforts under the Renewed Hope Agenda include the implementation of the Electricity Act of 2023 and the Presidential Power Initiative with Siemens. Challenges such as vandalism, aging infrastructure, and inefficiencies in the electricity value chain have been significant hurdles. The Transmission Company of Nigeria has spent a substantial amount on repairing vandalized towers.

The minister emphasized the need for collective responsibility among stakeholders and the importance of innovation to build confidence and deliver a stable energy future for all Nigerians. The Integrated National Electricity Policy, developed with the support of PwC, aims to enhance market discipline, improve energy delivery efficiency, and ensure subsidies benefit those most in need.
