Amidst the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, Nigerians were spotted flocking to various markets in Lagos for last-minute shopping. Prices of essential items like foodstuffs had noticeably increased compared to previous years and even weeks leading up to the holiday.
At the Ijora frozen foods market, the cost of a carton of turkey had surged from N44,000 to N57,000 within a few days. Similarly, a carton of chicken was priced at around N84,000, and a sack of croaker fish was being sold for N120,000.
Shoppers at Tejuosho Market were actively purchasing clothes and other items, although some bookshops had closed for the festive period. It was at this market that some point-of-sale operators shared tactics to avoid the N50 electronic transfer levy on transactions over N10,000.
Trade Fair market along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway was bustling with activity as customers bought a variety of products ranging from cosmetics to food items. Prices for items like onions, bell peppers, cabbage, and tomatoes varied, with some items being sold at premium rates.
Transport fares had also experienced an uptick, with commuters noticing an increase in prices for various routes across the city. Despite the higher costs, people were seen navigating through the markets and streets, embracing the holiday spirit and making the most of the festive season.
