Starlink, a satellite internet service, has notified its Nigerian customers about an upcoming increase in monthly subscription prices. The new rates are scheduled to go into effect on January 27, 2025. New subscribers will be subject to the adjusted prices immediately, while existing customers will see the changes reflected in their upcoming bills.
In a communication sent to users, Starlink stated, “To continue improving the Starlink network and delivering reliable, high-quality service in Nigeria, we are making adjustments to our monthly subscription prices. These changes are part of our ongoing efforts to invest in the necessary infrastructure for enhancing your experience with Starlink.”
With the new pricing structure, the lowest subscription tier will see a significant increase from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000 per month. Additionally, the mobile global roaming service will now be priced at ₦717,000 monthly. This marks the second time that Starlink has tried to raise prices in Nigeria. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had previously rejected a price increase in October due to lack of regulatory approval.
Telecom operators in Nigeria have been advocating for tariff hikes for years but have faced challenges in obtaining approval from the NCC. However, there are indications that the NCC may approve an increase in the first quarter of 2025, as reported by TechCabal. Starlink’s communication to customers implies that the company is preparing for this timeline to coincide with the anticipated regulatory changes.
This recent development in the Nigerian internet market could signify a broader shift in pricing strategies for satellite and telecom services, impacting consumers and the competitive landscape.
