No military invasion in Delta community – LG chair

The Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Area in Delta State recently clarified that the military presence in Okpare-Olomu community was not an invasion but part of routine monitoring patrols. Tension had risen in the area due to memories of a previous military incident in Okuama community. The council chairman’s office issued a statement refuting claims of invasion and explained that the military presence was to enforce a directive to postpone a community conference for peace and stability.

The community youth leader linked the tension to a land dispute and recounted an incident involving the police, vigilantes, and community members. Allegations against the soldiers were dismissed as baseless, with the youth leader mentioning efforts to restore peace and recover a stolen rifle. The community President-General’s insistence on holding a conference despite ongoing issues was highlighted.

The President-General of the community attributed the crisis to disputes over land sales by certain elders and emphasized his commitment to holding the annual conference. The traditional ruler of Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom expressed gratitude for Senator Ned Nwoko’s intervention in securing the release of a detained community leader, bringing relief to Okuama.

The situation involving individuals arrested by the military in August remains unresolved.
