FMC Umuahia awaits hospital upgrade as CMD advocates federal varsity

The delay in converting the FMC Umuahia to a teaching hospital is due to the absence of a federal university offering medical sciences courses in the state, as highlighted by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Azubuike Onyebuchi. He emphasized the need for a conventional university in Abia State to kickstart a College of Medicine, paving the way for FMC Umuahia to become a teaching hospital. Despite existing universities in the state offering medical sciences, they are not sufficient for this purpose.

Onyebuchi showcased the new infrastructure at the center, including the Accident and Emergency ward, Microbiology Diagnostic Laboratory Complex, Orthopedic ward, National Health Insurance Scheme building, among others. He expressed determination to meet set targets by 2025, emphasizing efficient fund management amidst improved funding to tertiary hospitals. The challenge of staff turnover was acknowledged, with replacements being facilitated by the Federal Government.

Under his management, Onyebuchi assured staff of FMC Umuahia of continuous improvement, increased budgetary allocations, timely promotions, and enhanced staff welfare. The Methodist Church Nigeria Bishop of Umuahia advised staff to show respect and avoid backbiting, emphasizing patience and dedication at work.

Union leaders from various healthcare unions participated in the guided tour of the center, showing support for the ongoing developments.
