Recent developments have seen diplomatic tensions rise as the Benin Republic summoned a Nigerien diplomat over allegations made by Niger’s junta leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, accusing Benin of supporting terrorist activities in West Africa.
Benin has refuted these claims as baseless and incendiary and has formally protested against them by summoning the Nigerien chargé d’affaires for clarification on the accusations.
In response to the accusations made during a Christmas Day address by Tchiani, Benin’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized its commitment to peace and cooperation with its neighboring countries.
This diplomatic strain comes in the context of regional challenges following a military coup in Niger in July 2023, which led to the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum.
While there have been recent disputes between Niger and Benin over various issues such as oil exports and border closures, both nations had shown signs of reconciliation, including the exchange of new ambassadors.
Benin’s foreign ministry reiterated its stance on fostering dialogue and cooperation between the two countries, warning that unfounded allegations could jeopardize regional stability.
The accusations have also garnered responses from other involved countries, with Nigeria being accused of hosting a French military base allegedly aimed at destabilizing Niger.
Nigeria’s National Security Adviser dismissed these claims, affirming that Nigeria does not permit foreign military bases on its territory and expressing openness to dialogue with Niger.
