The legal team of the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, has requested a postponement of the sentencing in his hush money trial, originally scheduled for January 10.
The motion argues that the sentencing is not lawful, referencing a recent Supreme Court ruling on immunity, the state constitution of New York, and other legal precedents.
In a statement to CBS News, Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, emphasized the need to halt the political exploitation of the justice system and what he described as ongoing witch hunts for Trump’s return to the White House.
Cheung further stated, “The recent Supreme Court ruling on Immunity, the state constitution of New York, and established legal precedents require the immediate dismissal of this baseless accusation.”
Trump was found guilty in May on 34 charges of tampering with business records related to a $130,000 payment to former adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
The payment was aimed at silencing Daniels’ claims of a past relationship with Trump in 2006, just before the 2016 presidential election.
The sentencing is currently scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on January 10, shortly before Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
