French magazine run by autistic journalists hits newsstands

A magazine created by a team of journalists with autism spectrum disorders in France has made its debut on newsstands. Le Papotin, produced by around 40 autistic journalists, features celebrity interviews and cultural content. The magazine, which is usually available online, will now be sold in 3,000 shops and newsstands across France. With a print run of 10,000 copies, the latest edition showcases French musician Philippe Katerine on the cover. The initiative, which began in 1990 at a hospital in suburban Paris, has also inspired a popular TV show where the journalists interview notable figures. Previous interviewees include President Emmanuel Macron, rugby player Antoine Dupont, and astronaut Thomas Pesquet. Macron, who has emphasized improving support for autistic children, faced candid questions during his 2023 interview. The United Nations’ Committee on the Rights of the Child has highlighted concerns about institutionalizing children with disabilities, including those on the autism spectrum.
