The recent election of Joseph Aoun as the President of Lebanon has been welcomed by the Federal Government. Aoun secured 99 votes in Lebanon’s parliament, ending a deadlock that had persisted since October 2022. Nigeria expressed its commitment to enhancing the longstanding relationship between the two nations.
Nigeria congratulated Joseph Aoun on his election as President of Lebanon and emphasized the desire to strengthen the historical ties between the countries for the mutual benefit of their citizens. Aoun, who previously served as Lebanon’s army chief, garnered support from various political factions and international powers like the US, France, and Saudi Arabia.
Following his election, Aoun is expected to play a crucial role in Lebanon’s recovery and stability, especially in overseeing the implementation of a ceasefire agreement with Israel. He aims to lead Lebanon towards a new phase by restoring state control over weapons, focusing on reconstruction efforts in conflict-affected areas, which are estimated to cost around $8.5 billion according to the World Bank.
