1,100 Kogi flood victims receive relief items from EU, Red Cross

During a recent visit to the flood-affected Edegaki Community in Kogi Local Government Area, the Acting Secretary of the Kogi State Branch of the Nigeria Red Cross, Abdullahi Abubakar, revealed that over 1,100 households impacted by the 2024 flood disaster had received relief items from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations intervention project, facilitated by the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Society.

Abubakar mentioned that the relief items, which included essentials like 20-liter jerrycans, buckets, Aqua tabs, and ATM preloaded with N77,000 for each household, were distributed as part of the ECHO project’s efforts to provide support to flood-affected households in Kogi, Delta, and Anambra states.

The beneficiaries were selected based on specific criteria such as age, health condition, disability, and pregnancy status. Communities most severely impacted by the flood in each of the three Local Government Areas were prioritized for assistance.

Furthermore, the community leader of Edegaki expressed gratitude on behalf of the residents for the timely intervention and support provided by the ECHO project, the Nigeria Red Cross, and their partners. He emphasized the community’s recurrent struggles with flooding and commended the organizations for their assistance and training on utilizing the relief items effectively.

The initiative was a collaborative effort aimed at addressing the immediate needs of flood-affected households and ensuring that the relief items reached those most vulnerable within the communities.
