Students to picket MTN head office over tariff hike

The Lagos State Chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Committee has expressed their intention to organize a protest at MTN Nigeria’s headquarters over the recent data tariff hike. MTN had increased the price of its 15GB weekly data plan, which was met with criticism and actions from various groups.

Despite MTN’s claim of reversing the price hike due to public outcry, NANS JCC Lagos criticized the telecom company for replacing the plan with a lower data volume at a higher cost. They consider this move exploitative and detrimental to students and Nigerians who rely on affordable data for educational and daily activities.

NANS JCC Lagos has demanded a complete reversal of the tariff hike, restoration of the original data plan, student-friendly data options, and regulatory intervention in telecom pricing. They have issued a 72-hour ultimatum for a full reversal and threatened a mass protest if their demands are not met.

The students have called for solidarity from youth organizations, civil society groups, and the public to challenge what they perceive as unjust pricing practices by telecom companies. MTN Nigeria has confirmed the discontinuation of the plan in question, offering other service options within regulatory guidelines.
