FG to review strategy for countering violent extremism

The government has disclosed its intentions to reassess Nigeria’s Policy Framework and National Action Plan for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism to improve its efficiency and lasting impact. The National Coordinator of the Counter-Terrorism Centre conveyed this during a meeting in Abuja aimed at revisiting the current framework established in 2017.

During the meeting, emphasis was placed on the importance of documenting and institutionalizing successful outcomes from various projects and initiatives related to Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE). The goal of the review process is to incorporate best practices into an updated framework that is more robust and influential.

Despite the accomplishments and obstacles encountered with the 2017 framework, there is a recognized necessity for a more resilient and adaptable approach. The commitment to strengthening PCVE efforts nationwide through enhanced coordination, engagement with stakeholders, and evidence-based decision-making was reiterated by the NCTC-ONSA.

Furthermore, the Director of Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism at NCTC highlighted the significance of involving key stakeholders in the review process to ensure that the revised framework is thorough and responsive to evolving trends in violent extremism. Integrating successful pilot projects and programs into the revised framework was emphasized to ensure continuity and sustainability.

In conclusion, the focus remains on enhancing stakeholder engagement, coordination, and effective change management to solidify the institutionalization of PCVE efforts. The goal is for NCTC-ONSA to evolve into a regional Center of Excellence in preventing and countering violent extremism.
