The House of Representatives has called upon the Federal Government to hasten the completion of the Lokoja-Felele-Benin-Lagos Expressway to reduce the occurrence of accidents leading to fatalities and injuries. This decision came after a motion was presented during a plenary session by a representative of Lokoja/Kogi Federal Constituency.
The lawmaker expressed concern over the high number of accidents on the road, particularly emphasizing a tragic incident involving students. To address the situation, urgent measures such as road expansion, a bypass, and a flyover bridge were suggested to improve safety along the hazardous stretch of the highway.
Furthermore, the House urged the Federal Government to work in collaboration with relevant agencies to enhance road infrastructure and implement safety measures, including the construction of pedestrian bridges and regulating truck movements during specific hours.
In a separate motion, the House highlighted the need to address the indiscriminate parking of petroleum and articulated vehicles in Bida, Niger State, to prevent potential dangers. The representative of Bida/Gbako/Katcha Federal Constituency raised concerns over safety risks posed by improperly parked tankers and emphasized the importance of regulatory enforcement to avert disasters.
To mitigate these risks, suggestions were made, such as constructing a dual-carriage bypass and engaging with key stakeholders to ensure safety compliance. Additionally, efforts to improve road conditions and security along the Mokwa-Makera-Tegina-Birnin Gwari-Kaduna route were emphasized to reduce traffic congestion and enhance safety.
Overall, the House called for collaborative efforts between the Federal Government, relevant authorities, and stakeholders to prioritize road safety, infrastructure development, and security measures to safeguard lives and prevent accidents.
