A group of elders affiliated with the All Progressives Congress in Benue State voiced their approval of the state House of Assembly’s decision to recommend the removal of Chief Judge Justice Maurice Ikpambese. During a press conference in Makurdi, Senator Barnabas Gemade, a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, conveyed the group’s endorsement of the assembly’s resolution. The elders cited alleged financial misconduct totaling approximately N667 million under the chief judge’s supervision within a year.
Moreover, the party elders praised the assembly for suspending 13 members who had opposed the decision to suspend the Chief Judge. Senator Gemade emphasized that the assembly’s actions were in accordance with the constitutional guidelines as outlined in Section 292(1)(a)(ii) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria. The elders expressed solidarity with the assembly, citing grave allegations of financial mismanagement and abuse of office by the Chief Judge.
They urged all stakeholders in the state to prioritize unity and cooperation, encouraging constructive engagement from the opposition. The elders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the state government and fostering development in Benue State. Additionally, they extended a vote of confidence to President Bola Tinubu for upholding the Renewed Hope Agenda and pledged their support for both the president and the state governor in the upcoming elections.
