In Kogi Central Senatorial District, some constituents have initiated a recall process against their senator, citing dissatisfaction with her representation. The recall process, which took place in Okehi Local Government Area, drew a significant number of voters expressing support for the recall. One constituent mentioned that the dissatisfaction stemmed from the senator’s perceived failure to address important issues like poverty, infrastructure, and education.
The recall process is set to span two days across all polling units in the five local governments of Kogi Central, where constituents will sign a petition for the senator’s recall. However, there have been reports of constituents being misled into providing their signatures under false pretenses.
The state Resident Electoral Commissioner denied knowledge of any recall process, dismissing the reports as unconfirmed social media speculations. It was also mentioned that the senator is currently serving a six-month suspension for violating Senate rules.
The guidelines for a recall process involve presenting a petition to the Chairman of the Commission by the petitioners’ representatives after notifying the member in question. The petition must be signed by over half of the registered voters in the member’s constituency, with the list of signatories serving as the Register of Petitioners for the recall purpose. Verification of signatures will take place in the Polling Units within the member’s constituency as part of the process.
