Lind, Hashimoto near WTT Contender Lagos history

Defending champions Anders Lind of Denmark and Japan’s Honoka Hashimoto are one victory away from becoming the first players to retain the men’s and women’s singles titles, respectively, at the WTT Contender Lagos.

Since the WTT Contender Lagos began in 2023, no player has ever defended a title back-to-back, but both players could rewrite history on Sunday (today).

Lind, who lifted the men’s singles crown in 2025 after defeating Croatia’s Tomislav Pucar, returns to Lagos for the third time, and he is on the brink of becoming the first male player in the tournament’s history to claim consecutive singles titles.

Standing in Lind’s way is Korea Republic’s Oh Junsung, whose maiden appearance in Lagos has already made waves. Junsung swept aside India’s Manush Shah with a commanding 3 –1 semi-final win, while Lind had to dig deep, edging Korea Republic’s Lim Jonghoon 3–2 in a thrilling contest to secure his place in the final.

Hashimoto’s journey mirrors Lind’s in ambition. On her debut in Lagos last year, she stunned the field by dethroning India’s defending champion, Sreeja Akula, to capture the women’s singles crown.

Now, Hashimoto seeks to become the first female player to achieve back-to-back triumphs. Her semi-final victory was emphatic — a 3–0 dismantling of Korea Republic’s Cheonhui Joo.

But the final presents a formidable challenge: compatriot Satsuki Odo, the tournament’s top seed and most experienced contender.

Odo underlined her dominance with a 3–1 win over fellow Japanese star Hitomi Sato, reaffirming her status as the highest-ranked female in Lagos.

The women’s final promises a clash of styles — Hashimoto’s defensive resilience against Odo’s attacking precision. For Hashimoto, it is a chance to carve her name into history, for Odo, an opportunity to assert her supremacy.
