Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu will undergo a scan in Lisbon, Portugal, on Monday (today) to determine the extent of the injury he suffered in training on Saturday, Sports Extra reports.
Ogbu was ruled out of Nigeria’s upcoming friendly against Portugal after suffering a suspected rupture of his left Achilles tendon during training on Saturday.
With 22 players in training on Sunday evening ahead of the game, the team’s Media Officer, Promise Efoghe, noted that the player was still in camp and would be further assessed on Monday.
“Injured Igoh Ogbu is still in the Super Eagles camp. Disregard reports that he has gone back to Prague. He will undergo a scan here in Lisbon on Monday,” Efoghe said in a team update on their WhatsApp group for journalists.
The defender has been solid for Nigeria in the last three games.
He featured throughout the Unity Cup triumph in London and played 45 minutes against Poland last Wednesday in Warsaw.
With coach Eric Chelle’s selection already limited by withdrawals, the player’s injury leaves him with Calvin Bassey, Emmanuel Fernandez and Semi Ajayi as his centre-back options.
Nigeria face a Portugal side that has been boosted by the arrival of their Paris Saint-Germain quartet — Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, João Neves and Gonçalo Ramos — who linked up with the national squad on Saturday after helping PSG defeat Arsenal in the Champions League final the previous weekend.
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez also confirmed that all four players are expected to be available for the Nigeria clash, with only Rafael Leão, who was sent off against Chile, unavailable for selection.
