Two Nigerian brothers have been sentenced to 18 years in prison each for engaging in sextortion of a 17-year-old high school student. The brothers, aged 24 and 21, were also given five years of supervised release for conspiracy to sexually exploit minors. The United States Justice Department revealed that they exploited and extorted money from over 100 individuals, including 11 minors, leading to the death of the student. The Attorney General emphasized that this case should serve as a warning to those involved in online sexual exploitation. The US Attorney for the Western District of Michigan highlighted the importance of caution when using phones and communication devices. The FBI also stated that the sentencing of the brothers ensures they will no longer harm minors in the US or worldwide. The sextortion scheme resulted in the tragic death of the high school student, which led to charges against the brothers and another individual. The brothers were extradited to the US and pleaded guilty to the charges.
