The latest nuclear reactor in France faced significant delays and cost overruns before resuming operations. The European Pressurised Reactor in Flamanville, Normandy, was completed 12 years late for 13.2 billion euros. The reactor had shut down automatically earlier but resumed operations after carrying out divergence operations to create a stable nuclear reaction. The French state-owned energy company EDF confirmed that the unit was expected to be connected to the grid by the end of autumn. The shutdown earlier in the week was attributed to a human error, according to the French nuclear safety authority ASN. The reactor is part of a new generation of nuclear plants championed by President Emmanuel Macron. Despite the setbacks, officials anticipate that once at full power, the reactor will be able to supply electricity to around three million homes.
