The recent use of Catholic clerical robes by students of a university in Makurdi has been strongly criticized by the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi. The students wore the robes during a drama performance as part of their graduation activities, causing controversy when images circulated on social media.
In a statement released by the Catholic Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria, Makurdi Diocese, the action was condemned as a blatant disrespect to the Catholic faith and its values. The statement emphasized that the use of clerical robes, especially by students, should accurately reflect the essence of the original text and not be used in a manner that mocks or disrespects the faith.
The statement further expressed disappointment in the university for allowing such actions, which were seen as an attack on the Catholic Church and a deliberate insult to the faith of its followers. The association highlighted the importance of respecting religious beliefs and the need to uphold decency and decorum in all circumstances.
As an organization responsible for communicating Christ and safeguarding the Church’s image, the association emphasized the need for responsible behavior, especially in matters concerning religion. It concluded by urging individuals to exercise caution and avoid crossing boundaries that may lead to disrespect or offense towards others’ beliefs.
