The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has issued a directive to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company to compensate various communities in Kogi and Abuja for service failures. This action was taken due to the company’s failure to meet the service delivery commitments outlined in the Service-Based Tariff system.
The affected areas include Wuse, Garki, and Asokoro in Abuja, as well as Ajaokuta Confluence in Lokoja, Kogi State. These areas experienced inadequate electricity supply despite being promised a minimum of 20 hours of daily electricity under Band A.
For example, the 132kv Central Area T/S_33KV FDR_B33_8B Wuse feeder had an average performance of 16.52 hours, leading to its downgrade from Band A to Band B with compensation for affected customers mandated by NERC.
Other feeders in Garki and Asokoro also fell short of the required hours of electricity supply, prompting NERC to ensure compensation for the affected communities.
This move by NERC is part of its efforts to hold electricity distribution companies accountable and ensure they fulfill their service-based tariff commitments. Any feeder failing to meet the required hours of electricity supply for seven consecutive days will be downgraded, and affected customers will be compensated accordingly.
Additionally, AEDC has been directed to secure embedded generation capacity to enhance the reliability of electricity supply, with a minimum of 61MW capacity required as part of this effort.
These actions are in line with the government’s commitment to improving electricity supply across Nigeria, safeguarding consumers from service failures, and promoting accountability within the electricity sector.
