Adesanya visited Nigeria to activate African power — Gordons

Nigerian comedian Godwin Komone, also known as Gordons, shares insights on his admiration for UFC fighter Israel Adesanya, the quality of the current Super Eagles team, and more in a recent conversation.

Can you tell us about your interest in sports?

Growing up, I had a passion for football, but my family did not support sports. They had expectations of me pursuing a traditional career like medicine or law. Despite not being encouraged in sports, I still have a deep love for football and can play it well.

Why didn’t you pursue football?

Back then, there was little motivation to pursue sports as a career. The prevailing belief was that success meant following a conventional path like becoming a lawyer or an engineer.

Were you involved in your school’s football team?

Unfortunately, I was not allowed to join the team due to parental concerns. However, I often attended games as a spectator.

What is your favorite sport to watch?

UFC

Who is your favorite UFC fighter and why?

My favorite is Israel Adesanya. I admire his Nigerian heritage, his confidence, tactical fighting style, skill, and dedication. He represents Nigeria positively on a global platform, which makes me proud.

Despite Adesanya’s recent performances, I believe in his abilities and look forward to his upcoming fights.

Do you think Joshua will win his fight against Dubois?

We remain hopeful for Joshua’s victory and anticipate a professional performance from him.

Regarding Adesanya and Kamaru Usman’s decision not to fight each other, what are your thoughts?

It’s common for Nigerians to show unity when abroad. I believe both fighters can coexist without conflict in the industry, focusing on sportsmanship and skill.

In your opinion, who is the greatest Nigerian footballer and why?

I consider Jay-Jay Okocha the best Nigerian footballer ever due to his passion for the game and inspirational playing style.

What is your view on the current Super Eagles team?

I haven’t closely followed Nigerian football since Okocha’s era, but I acknowledge the team’s recent improvements. I believe the love for the Super Eagles will reignite among fans.

Would you support your children pursuing sports?

While I don’t dictate their future, I would gladly encourage my children if they excel in sports. I value their interests and would provide full support in their chosen paths.
