Breaking: Tanzania suspends Kenya’s NMG websites for 30 days

The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has taken action against Mwananchi Communication’s websites, which is a part of the largest independent media house in East Africa, citing the dissemination of content that goes against regulations. Mwananchi Communications, responsible for various news outlets, including The Citizen, Mwananchi, and Mwanaspoti, faced a suspension due to past infractions, such as the publication of a leaked video of former President John Magufuli during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following recent events where opposition leaders were arrested, and local news outlets were restricted from reporting on anti-government activities, concerns have arisen about the suppression of dissent in Tanzania. The crackdown on independent institutions has raised worries about a return to repressive governance similar to the previous administration.

Despite the online media suspension, Mwananchi Communications assured its audience that its print publications and broadcasts will continue unaffected. The company is dedicated to providing quality journalism and serving the public through various non-online platforms during this period. The impact on NMG’s Kenyan publications, such as The East African and Nation Africa, remains uncertain.

As the situation unfolds, Mwananchi Communications is engaging with regulatory bodies to address the suspension. The media house reaffirmed its commitment to delivering informative content while navigating the challenges posed by the current regulatory environment.
