In a recent development, a Federal High Court in Lagos has thrown out a fundamental rights lawsuit filed by a well-known individual against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Assembly.
The individual, commonly referred to as Bobrisky, had requested N200 million from the EFCC citing “psychotic trauma” and N1 billion from the National Assembly for an alleged “violation of his right to a fair hearing.”
Additionally, Bobrisky had asked the court to prevent the EFCC and the National Assembly from “harassing, detaining, or declaring him wanted.”
The controversy surrounding Bobrisky arose when a social media influencer claimed that Bobrisky had paid the EFCC N15 million to drop money laundering charges, which Bobrisky vehemently denied. Despite his denial, he did not comply with an invitation from the EFCC.
Although Bobrisky was prevented from boarding a flight to Amsterdam by the EFCC at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the court ruled on November 28, 2024, that Bobrisky’s claims lacked sufficient evidence to substantiate his allegations of rights violations.
The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity stated that the evidence presented did not support Bobrisky’s claims, resulting in the dismissal of the case and a decision not to award damages against the EFCC.
