FG spends N8.8bn to repair vandalised power towers – TCN

The government has acknowledged spending N8.8 billion on repairing transmission towers that were vandalized in various regions of the country in 2024. This information was disclosed by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Transition Company of Nigeria at a meeting in Abuja. Despite efforts to prosecute vandals, many are released on bail by the police, hindering progress in preventing further damage to critical infrastructure. Over 100 transmission towers have been destroyed by vandals or bandits between January and November 2024, costing significant resources to restore. The challenge of vandalism affecting the power sector is exacerbated by the difficulty in prosecuting and detaining perpetrators, leading to disruptions in providing electricity to citizens.
