FG unveils plans to reposition dams

The government recently announced intentions to revamp dams nationwide due to decreased water volume in the Ogwashi-Uku Dam caused by siltation. This was revealed during an inspection led by Abiola Oluwatosin of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation. The aim is to address challenges affecting dam infrastructure with a comprehensive action plan. The Presidential Inter-Ministerial Technical Committee on the Evaluation of Dams, chaired by Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsav, is overseeing this evaluation. The committee comprises experts from various federal ministries and technical bodies to assess the integrity of dams, their impact on communities, and environmental conditions. The inspection highlighted siltation issues reducing water volume and the necessity of addressing operational and maintenance challenges promptly. The Managing Director of the Benin-Owena River Basin Authority, Mr. Salin Ahmed, emphasized the dam’s features and its potential with a 1-megawatt hydropower component.
