A group known as the Network for the Actualisation of Social Growth and Viable Development has expressed strong disapproval of the detention and alleged mistreatment of young individuals involved in the recent #EndBadGovernance protests. The group issued a statement through its Nigerian representative, Akingunola Omoniyi, urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene and stop the legal proceedings against the protesters, most of whom are minors. They emphasized that the trial could tarnish the government’s reputation and urged for a compassionate approach towards the young demonstrators.
The group emphasized that the physical condition of the accused young individuals should prompt a reconsideration of the charges brought against them. They highlighted the importance of nurturing future leaders rather than punishing them. The group, NEFGAD, emphasized its commitment to advocating for the nation’s advancement and urged President Bola Tinubu to heed their plea and take prompt action to prevent further legal actions against the young protesters.
Reports indicate that a group of approximately 75 young protesters faced charges in the Federal High Court in Abuja, accused by the Nigeria Police Force of various offenses related to their involvement in the nationwide protest. Despite some protesters fainting during the court proceedings, Justice Obiora Egwuatu granted bail to the majority of the minors, setting bail conditions at ₦10 million each. The young individuals, aged between 12 and 15, had been in custody since their arrest on August 3 prior to their court appearance.
