when most people think of Kunle Afolayan, they picture the award-winning filmmaker behind acclaimed productions such as The Figurine, October 1, Aníkúlápó, and others.
But beyond the cameras, scripts and film sets lies another passion closely tied to his creative world: an impressive fleet of vintage cars.
The celebrated filmmaker is widely known for his love of classic automobiles, owning a carefully curated collection of well-preserved vehicles that appear to transport admirers back in time. Far from being a casual luxury hobby, this passion is deeply connected to his storytelling craft.
Afolayan’s fascination with vintage cars was born out of a practical challenge during the production of period films. In a past interview, he stated that while striving for historical accuracy, he often struggled to find functional classic vehicles that could authentically represent different eras in Nigerian history. Rather than compromise on quality or realism, he opted to find a lasting solution himself.
What began as a production necessity gradually evolved into a well-curated collection that now serves both artistic and practical purposes. Today, his vintage automobiles are not only prized personal possessions but also essential tools that help bring his cinematic visions to life.
Among the standout pieces in his collection is a 1929 Mercedes-Benz Gazelle convertible, distinguished by its deep blue exterior, rich mahogany leather seats, and wooden dashboard; a striking embodiment of old-world elegance. He also owns a fourth-generation Ford Thunderbird, a luxury V8-powered model produced between 1964 and 1966, reflecting his appreciation for timeless automotive engineering.
Over the years, Afolayan has occasionally shared glimpses of his collection with the public. Some of the cars, affectionately nicknamed “Ijapa” (the tortoise), are easily recognised by their customised “KAP” licence plates, a nod to his personal brand and identity.
Today, his growing collection forms an important part of the KAP Film Village and Resort in Oyo State. The vehicles serve a dual purpose, functioning as tourist attractions while also providing filmmakers with ready access to authentic period automobiles, eliminating the logistical challenges that once hindered his productions.
What started as a creative necessity has since evolved into a preservation effort, ensuring that classic automobiles, and the cultural memories, they carry remain alive for future generations.
