The coach of Atalanta Gian Piero Gasperini has mentioned that Ademola Lookman’s recent involvement with the Nigerian national team affected his fitness in their 2-0 win against Venezia, as reported by Sports Extra.
Gasperini, speaking after the Serie A match on Saturday, explained that Lookman had difficulties contributing defensively and was therefore substituted due to his inability to support the team.
“He (Lookman) had trouble tracking back and assisting in defense, so he was not playing for the team. Venezia was becoming stronger, and I needed to strengthen the team’s cohesion,” Gasperini told DAZN.
The coach’s remarks shed light on the challenges faced by players returning from international duties, particularly those involved in African qualifiers. Lookman took part in Nigeria’s recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya, which was a challenging experience.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Lookman started for Atalanta against Venezia but could not maintain his usual performance levels. The 26-year-old came close to scoring, hitting the crossbar with one of several significant opportunities for the team.
Lookman, a crucial player for Atalanta, has contributed three goals and three assists in all competitions this season.
His performances have received recognition, with Lookman recently being nominated as the sole African candidate for the 2024 Ballon d’Or.
Reports suggest that Lookman might be on the move in the January transfer window, with several Premier League clubs reportedly showing interest in him. ESPN reported that the forward, contracted to Atalanta until 2026, could be available for as little as €25m.
Gasperini’s comments on Lookman’s fitness come ahead of Atalanta’s upcoming Champions League match against Celtic on Wednesday. The coach hopes that the Nigerian player can regain his form and fitness quickly as the team aims to progress in both domestic and European competitions.
With the January transfer window approaching, attention will be on Lookman’s performances and potential next steps. Currently, the focus remains on his recovery and contribution to Atalanta’s campaign as they sit sixth in the Serie A standings, level on points with Lazio and Udinese.
