Joshua still devastated by Dubois loss

Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn has acknowledged that Anthony Joshua is still processing his recent loss to Daniel Dubois and carefully evaluating his choices for a potential rematch.

The former two-time unified heavyweight champion was defeated by Dubois in the fifth round of their fight at Wembley last month, a result that has left him contemplating his next steps.

Dubois, who maintained his IBF heavyweight title, knocked Joshua down four times before ending the fight 59 seconds into the fifth round, securing a remarkable victory. Joshua, who had been on a winning streak after losses to Oleksandr Usyk, was seen as the favorite entering the match.

He had previously defeated former UFC champion Francis Ngannou earlier in the year, solidifying his position as a top contender in the heavyweight division. Nevertheless, the loss to Dubois has led the 34-year-old to consider his future in the sport.

During an interview with DAZN, Hearn provided insight into Joshua’s current mindset. “It’s still quite recent, just three weeks ago. He’s devastated by the loss,” he stated.

“Daniel has been enjoying his time as the new champion, and it’s well-deserved. Within AJ’s contract, there is a timeframe for him to make a decision, which hasn’t expired yet, but he is reflecting on his options. He’s giving his body some rest and determining his next steps.”

Hearn confirmed that talks about a potential rematch are ongoing, suggesting that Joshua is inclined towards a rematch with Dubois despite uncertainties.

“When considering the options, there are no wrong decisions,” Hearn told Sky Sports.

“His goal is to win the world heavyweight title, which might involve a rematch with Dubois rather than facing Deontay Wilder or waiting for Tyson Fury. Ultimately, the decision rests with AJ, and I believe convincing him to take the rematch will be challenging.”

Experienced heavyweight Derek Chisora also shared his thoughts on Joshua’s predicament, offering direct advice.

“He should pursue the rematch immediately,” Chisora expressed on ‘The Stomping Ground’.

“Kudos to Daniel Dubois, the new champion, but Joshua should go for it. What other option does he have? Face Deontay Wilder first and then return to fight Dubois? No, he should seize the rematch opportunity now.”

Although there is no explicit rematch clause in the contract, reports suggest that Joshua has one fight remaining in his Riyadh Season deal, and both Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the Saudi General Entertainment Authority, and Dubois are keen on arranging the rematch.
