June 12, symbol of democracy — Abia LP

The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party says June 12 remains a historic symbol of the collective struggle for freedom, justice, popular participation, and the right of the people to determine their own future through democratic processes.

In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the state party chairman, Peter Azubuike, the party said that, as the people of Abia State continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy through the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, it is important to remind citizens that democracy can only flourish when citizens actively participate in the electoral process.

The party said it is joining millions of Nigerians in commemorating the sacrifices, courage, and resilience of the heroes and heroines who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance in the country.

It therefore called on all eligible residents of the state to take advantage of the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission Continuous Voter Registration exercise by registering and obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards.

“We particularly urge young men and women who have recently attained the age of 18 years to seize this opportunity to register and become active participants in shaping the future of our state and nation.

“The PVC is more than a card; it is the most powerful democratic instrument in the hands of the people. It is the tool through which citizens elect leaders, hold governments accountable, protect good governance, and safeguard the future of generations yet unborn,” the party said.

The party warned that every eligible citizen who fails to register risks surrendering their democratic voice, adding that no Abian should be left behind in this civic responsibility.

It also encouraged community leaders, religious institutions, youth organisations, market associations, artisans, transport unions, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to support the sensitisation campaign by mobilising their members, families, friends, and communities to register before the exercise closes.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us remember that the protection of democracy does not end with enjoying its benefits. It requires active participation, vigilance, and commitment from every citizen.

“Together, let us strengthen democracy, protect the gains of good governance, and secure a brighter future for Abia State through active voter participation,” the party added.
