The internal crisis within the Kano State chapter of the New Nigerian People’s Party escalated with a series of suspensions among its members. The party chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, announced the suspension of two prominent officials, the Secretary to the State Government and the Commissioner for Transport, over alleged disrespect towards the party. This move followed a peace negotiation led by Governor Abba Yusuf between party stakeholders and the Kwankwasiyya movement. Despite the turmoil, the national leader of the party, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, refrained from commenting on the situation.
Efforts to gather the governor’s response were unsuccessful as he was reported to be out of the state. Before his suspension, the Secretary to the State Government distanced himself from a faction within the party known as “Abba Should Stand On His Feet.” The group had urged the governor to assert his authority independently of Kwankwaso’s influence.
Following a closed-door reconciliation meeting facilitated by the governor, the suspended official pledged to address the issues within his constituency and disassociate himself from dissenting factions. Subsequently, the party chairman announced the suspension of the two officials based on complaints received from various party leadership levels, citing their disregard for the party’s authority and structure.
